Kingsport Book Fair formerly AAUW Book Fair

 

History of Book Fair:

  • Started in 1961 by AAUW, Kingsport Branch – every 2 years until 2011 = 50 years -> 26 Book Fairs

  • Friends of Library (FOL) invited to join aged AAUW (after 2005 Book Fair) as 50/50 partner -> 50% of profits

  • April 2011 -> AAUW, Kingsport Branch disbanded & FOL “inherited’ Book Fair & rename it as Kingsport Book Fair

  • Summer 2011 -> First Book – Greater Kingsport (FBGK) accepted the invitation from FOL to partner

  • Now an annual event – early to midMARCH each year – Kingsport Civic Auditorium

  • Profits from Book Fair are split 50/50 between FOL & FBGK

Pre-Book Fair Process – almost every day the Library is open

Donations arrive at the Library -> dropped off @ New Street Entrance or picked up.  In addition to books, donations include

Videos: DVDs / CDs / Cassette / VHS tapes / Vinyl records (LPs / 45s / 78s)

Magazines 

Comic books

Jigsaw puzzles & educational games

Donations moved to Mezz Office (3rd) floor – sorted & priced ($.25 to $5.00) – volunteers are TRAINED on how to transport / price / sort / box donations

Sorted/Priced items are boxed into boxes that a normal person can move -> nothing heavy

Transport boxes priced donations from Mezz Office to rented Still Trailer until Book Fair weekend

Book Fair Sale Process – 

  • 8am, Wednesday of Book Fair weekend – trailer moved to Civic Auditorium & unloaded

  • Thursday: Books unboxed – >2000 boxes (most are size of 4 gallons of milk) -> 9:30am until all are unboxed

  • Pre$ale, Thursday, 5 – 9pm -> $10 cash: Vendors / Collectors / Book Fair supporters

  • Academic Pre$ale, Thursday, 7-9pm -> $5 cash: valid faculty/staff/student ID required for discount

  • Friday & Saturday, 9 am – 7pm + Sunday 12:45 - 5pm (3+ hour shifts)

½ price sale begins @ 4pm on Saturday

  • $10 Bag Sale begins 12:30pm on Sunday

  • Following Book Fair sale – unsold books must be reboxed & removed from Civic Auditorium (loaded back on Still Transfer trailer @ Civic Auditorium - 200-300 boxes of leftovers are donated or sold!
